About New Found Horizon
Hawaii's Independent Retirement Planning Agency

What is New Found Horizon and who is behind it?

New Found Horizon is an independent retirement coordination agency based on Hawaiʻi's Big Island, serving all of Hawaiʻi. Founded by Gustavo Zabarain, NFH coordinates Medicare, retirement income, life insurance, long-term care, and legacy planning for Hawaii families — with no carrier loyalties, no product quotas, and no agenda other than the family in front of us.

Every agent at NFH holds the same standard — discovery before direction, independence over product, and the whole picture before anything is recommended.

Why Gustavo built New Found Horizon —
and why he built it here.

There is a moment Gustavo thinks about often. It's the reason this agency exists. It's also the standard every agent at NFH is held to.

A family did everything right — and still arrived at retirement exposed. People he knew from the community. Careful savers. Hardworking. They arrived at the retirement transition and found their savings more exposed than anyone had told them. The market moved at the worst possible time. Their Medicare agent was focused on Medicare. Their financial advisor was focused on investments. Nobody was looking at the whole picture. They faced the most consequential financial transition of their lives completely alone.

The retirement industry was built around products — not people. Medicare agents sell Medicare. Financial advisors manage portfolios. Nobody sits with a family and looks at income, coverage, protection, and legacy as one connected plan. That gap costs families money, peace of mind, and decisions that can't be undone.

NFH was built to be the answer to that gap. Not another product. Not another specialist. An independent agency whose loyalty runs in one direction only — to the family sitting across the table. Every agent. Every conversation. Every time.

Hawaii made that mission more urgent — not less. The highest cost of living in the country. The highest life expectancy. Healthcare networks that vary dramatically by island. Multigenerational households under pressure from both ends. The families here face a retirement reality no mainland guide fully addresses — and they deserve someone who actually knows these waters.

We look at all of it together. Before we recommend anything.

— Gustavo Zabarain, Founder, New Found Horizon

Your Horizon, Fully Charted

Most families arrive carrying questions they've had for months. Most leave saying the same thing — that someone finally looked at the whole picture.

The local knowledge that changes outcomes. A client had already decided on a Medicare Advantage plan because the premium was the lowest available. She hadn't checked whether her primary care doctor in Kona was in the network. He wasn't. We ran her specific providers against every plan available in Hawaii County — found a plan that covered her doctor, her specialist, and all four of her medications for $11 more per month than the plan she had almost chosen. She left saying she finally understood what she had.

The retirement that finally held. A client came to us on a fixed income in her late 60s — Social Security, a small savings account, and a retirement that didn't quite add up against Hawaii's cost of living. The fear was specific: would her money last as long as she did. In Hawaii where life expectancy is the highest in the country, that's not an abstract question. We looked at her whole picture. A fixed annuity converted a portion of her savings into guaranteed monthly income she could not outlive — regardless of what the market did. She left knowing exactly what she had. And that it would hold.

The retirement picture most couples never run. Robert and his wife came in two years before retirement. They had a 401k, a small pension, and Social Security coming — and no idea how the three fit together. Their Social Security timing was going to cost them an estimated $340 more per month in Medicare premiums due to their income from two years prior. Their 401k withdrawal sequence was going to push them into a higher tax bracket in Hawaii. And they had no plan for what would happen to her income if he passed first. Three conversations. Three decisions changed. A retirement picture that now actually holds.

That's what it means to have your horizon fully charted.

"Gustavo isn't just our agent. He's someone we trust with decisions that matter. He took the time to understand our whole situation before recommending anything. That's rare."

Start with a conversation. No obligations. No pressure.

Our Foundation

Every family's story guides the process.

Before we recommend anything we listen. Your situation, your fears, your goals, your existing coverage — fully understood before anything is suggested. No exceptions.

Independence is a promise — not a positioning line.

NFH works with all major Medicare carriers available in Hawaiʻi, a broad range of life insurance carriers, and annuity products. The recommendation always follows the discovery. Never the other way around.

Local knowledge is functional — not decorative.

Understanding the Big Island's provider networks, the outer island healthcare reality, the multigenerational family dynamics, and the Hawaii-specific retirement complexity is built into every conversation. Not inserted afterward.

The relationship doesn't end at enrollment.

Annual reviews, AEP guidance, life event check-ins, and proactive outreach when something changes that affects your family. The work doesn't end when the paperwork is signed. It deepens.

Gustavo Zabarain founded NFH and is the primary agent on the Big Island. As NFH grows, every agent joining the team is held to the same process and values.

  • Yes. Every island. Every county. Oʻahu · Maui · Kauaʻi · Molokaʻi · Lānaʻi · Hawaiʻi Big Island.

  • A carrier booth agent represents one company and can only recommend that company's products. NFH is independent — we represent the family, not the carrier. That means the plan we recommend is the one that works for your situation, not the one we're contracted to sell.

  • No. The clarity call is complimentary. No cost, no obligation, no sales pressure. You leave knowing where you stand — whether you work with us or not.

  • Yes. Gustavo and his family are based on Hawaiʻi's Big Island — owner-built home on 13 acres in Hāmākua, deeply involved in the local community. NFH's roots are here. The local knowledge is real — not claimed.
